A bidirectional knowledge base
Around 47,000 headwords in each direction, including legal terminology. The structured material provides the foundation for the planned app and web service.
Flagship 02 / Languages and cultures
A dictionary, language learning and knowledge of two countries in one programme.
Our first language and culture project builds on long-term work with source material. Its purpose is to develop an approach that connects two languages and countries in a learning programme designed around users' needs.
Starting point
Finnish and Turkish are languages whose source material and cultural settings we know well. Around 20 years of work on vocabulary and terminology gives the project a tangible foundation.
Finnish belongs to the Uralic language family and Turkish to the Turkic family. Both languages require careful modelling and explanation of their suffixes and inflectional structures. [1–3] Connecting geographically separate settings also involves interpreting culture, everyday life and concepts.
We see this as a demanding direct connection between languages and cultures, through which we can test the full development process. The choice reflects our expertise and available knowledge base. The aim is to create a starting point for projects involving other languages and countries.
The project as a whole
Around 47,000 headwords in each direction, including legal terminology. The structured material provides the foundation for the planned app and web service.
Finnish and Turkish grammar, vocabulary, examples and interactive exercises are designed as one programme. Both languages are approached from the learner's starting point.
Introductions to the countries, cultures and everyday life help learners understand the context in which language is used. Planned formats include digital publications and country guides.
We are planning reciprocal introductory and educational content: Finland for Turkish-speaking audiences and Türkiye for Finnish-speaking audiences. Video supports understanding of language, concepts and cultural context.
Development goal
Once the content structure, learning design and digital delivery have been tested in this project, the experience can inform other language and country pairs.
Every new project needs its own material and experts. The goal is to reuse the approach to organisation and delivery while adapting the content, examples and user experience to a new setting.
Current stage
The dictionary material has been compiled. The app, web service and associated learning and country information are in development or planning. This page describes the goals and structure of our own prototype project.
The project is designed for learners of Finnish and Turkish, language professionals, education organisations and people moving between the countries. Expansion to new languages and countries will be assessed using delivery experience and user feedback.
